Ravenna superintendent responds to district’s bus driver shortage that has caused kids to miss school due to canceled routes

Six people were hospitalized after a Marlington Local Schools bus overturned on Monday. The driver, Debra Weisel, was cited for failure to control a motor vehicle.

Dr. Laura Hebert says the district started the year down three drivers. The school board hired three more Monday after some said their children were missing school.

RAVENNA, Ohio — Ravenna families are complaining of kids missing school because of transportation issues directly tied to the nationwide bus driver shortage.

“They can’t find [any] drivers, and you know, I don’t really believe it’s their fault,” said Polly Kinter, a Ravenna grandmother who says she now has to take her 6-year-old granddaughter to school each day because of canceled bus routes.

“On the first day of school they just never showed up to get her,” Kinter further explained. “No bus ever came when they told her they would.”

Kinter says her granddaughter has already missed about three to four days of school because of problems with transportation.

“Nobody’s more frustrated than I am,” Ravenna School District Superintendent Dr. Laura Hebert told 3News Monday. “Nobody wants to cancel a bus route or pick up a kid late. We want our bus routes running just as well as they were last year before we faced this bus driver shortage.”

According to Herbert, the district started the year down three bus drivers. She says transportation leaders have tried to combine bus routes and change pickup and drop off times, but when those don’t work, they’re forced to cancel routes.

If students miss school because of a canceled route, it’s an excused absence.

“Nobody wants a kid to be absent,” Hebert added. “We want our kids in the building. Our test scores went up a great deal this year. We’ve had a lot of progress academically, and the last thing I want to do is impact the progress and momentum we have academically because of a transportation issue.”

The district is actively recruiting bus drivers with Hebert saying three people are in the middle of the hiring process. Those were approved by the school board during Monday’s meeting.

The hiring, training, and approval process for new bus drivers takes about a month to complete in the district. Hebert is hoping they will have every bus route covered by the first week of October.

“We’ll still continue to recruit because we need substitutes,” she said. “We still need people to cover when somebody calls in sick.”

To Hebert, the impact of the bus driver shortage is communicating a valuable lesson to the community.

“I think the message is that a bus driver is every bit as important to a student’s academic, social, emotional, behavioral growth as any teacher, any staff member in the district.”

Pay for school bus drivers within the Ravenna School District ranges from $17.19 to $23.33 an hour, depending on experience. Those interested in applying can find more information here.

Israeli Power Company Reports Employee Fatally Struck By Attack From Lebanon

Shalom Abudi, a 56-year-old employee of an Israeli power firm, was murdered by an anti-tank missile strike that came from the other side of the Lebanese border.

The Israel Electric Corporation acknowledged that the event happened in the Dovev area, about half a mile (800 meters) from the border between Lebanon and Israel.

The bombing increased hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, a militia supported by Iran.

The region has experienced heightened confrontations, especially between Israel and Hezbollah, in the aftermath of Hamas’s October 7 onslaught from the Gaza Strip.

Indonesia Receives Almost 200 Rohingya Refugees, Reports Local Official

The largest group of Rohingya refugees to arrive in Indonesia’s westernmost region in months, approximately 200 people, including women and children, did so on Tuesday. The Rohingya, a marginalized ethnic group from Myanmar, frequently embark on risky maritime expeditions, enduring protracted and costly voyages in delicate vessels in an attempt to reach Malaysia or Indonesia.

Local navy commander Andi Susanto claimed that the 196 refugees landed in the Pidie region of Aceh Province, in a remote place.

Some of the evacuees left right away after arriving inland; accounts vary as to how many of the ten or seven who made their way to the neighboring hills sought safety. A representative for the local fishing community, Marfian, surmised that these people might have been middlemen who brought refugees to the area on purpose.

Residents and local authorities helped the refugees by bringing food and drink to those who were left stranded on the shore.

Images sent to AFP showed exhausted refugees—including mothers holding small children—waiting for assistance on the shore. With around 200 Rohingya reported dead or missing during such treacherous sea crossings last year, the UN refugee agency predicts that over 2,000 Rohingya have tried the dangerous trek to Southeast Asian countries in 2022.

There is a pattern to the Rohingya migrants traveling by water to Indonesia, which is followed in this episode. 184 Rohingya refugees were forced to swim ashore after being abandoned at sea before arriving in the town of Peureulak in eastern Aceh in March. The difficulties and dangers Rohingya refugees encounter on their journey to safety and a better life in Southeast Asia are brought to light by their continuous arrival.
