Canadian tennis squad reaches Billie Jean King Cup final with thrilling tiebreaker win

Canada has advanced to the Billie Jean King Cup final for the first time, led by the brilliant play of Leylah Fernandez.

In a second-set tiebreaker on Saturday, Fernadez and Gabriela Dabrowski defeated Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of Czechia 7-5, 7-6 (3), and Canada advanced with a 2-1 overall victory in the women’s international team tennis competition semifinal.

With his singles victory earlier in the day over Marketa Vondrousova (6-2, 2-6, 6-3), Fernandez gave Canada hope. In the Seville, Spain, final, she and Dabrowski defeated one of the world’s top doubles teams.

Fernandez declared, “It’s a great day for Canadian tennis,” and she and her teammates were motivated by the Canadian men’s Davis Cup victory in 2022.

“I was really happy to have the crowd support me during the singles match; it really helped me.”

The final will be streamed live on CBCSports.ca, the CBC Sports app, and CBC Gem starting at 9 a.m. ET.

Two months ago, Ottawa native Dabrowski, 31, became victorious in the women’s doubles championship of the U.S. Open.

The winner of the French Open in 2021, Krejcikova, has won seven major doubles championships with Siniakova, including the Australian Open this year.

The opening set of the crucial doubles match was won by Canada. The teams continued to play serve until Canada broke their opponents to take a 6-5 lead. They subsequently won the match on serve to seal the deal.

Late in the second set, the sides traded breaks. Nevertheless, Canada survived in the tiebreaker, with Fernandez serving to advance her team to the championship match.

Marina Stakusic of Canada lost to Krejcikova 2-6, 1-6, to start the semifinals. However, in the second match of the day, Fernandez defeated reigning Wimbledon women’s champion Denisa Vondrousova to keep Canada’s hopes alive.

Following her singles victory, the 21-year-old Fernandez stated, “I just played my game and tried to take it to her.” I adore tennis’ Billie Jean Cup. It is tennis’s World Cup.

It was only the second occasion, and the first since 1988, that Canada reached the semifinals of the coveted team tournament.

Vondrousova has won 14 straight games at the Billie Jean Cup. She made history this summer at Wimbledon by winning a Grand Slam match.

Fernandez ended the world No. 7’s 26-set victory streak and 13-match winning streak at the Billie Jean King Cup.

In the first game, which lasted ten minutes, Fernandez maintained serve. She quickly grabbed a 4-0 lead and held on to win the opening set 6-2.

The decisive set started with breaks to each other’s serves by Vondrousova and Fernandez. However, the No. 35-ranked native of Montreal gave Canada a 3-1 lead by breaking Vondrousova and winning her serve in the second set. She then held on to force a decisive doubles match.

That remarkable streak of Stakusic’s came to an end in the opening game against Czechia. The 18-year-old from Toronto, who is ranked 258th in the world, stunned two players in the top 70 with his first-round triumphs in Canada’s group-stage matches against Poland and Spain.

The Czech broke the Canadian in the opening game of the match, and she was already behind the 27-year-old Krejcikova.

After Stakusic rallied to trail 3-2 in the opening set, the 2021 French Open women’s champion quickly took the lead by winning three games in a row.

Global No. 10 To give Czechia a point, Krejcikova outperformed her youthful opponent, taking the second set 6-1.

Italy overcame Slovenia 2-0 on Saturday with to victories from Jasmine Paolini over Tamara Zidansek and Martina Trevisan over Kaja Juvan.

Indonesia Receives Almost 200 Rohingya Refugees, Reports Local Official

The largest group of Rohingya refugees to arrive in Indonesia’s westernmost region in months, approximately 200 people, including women and children, did so on Tuesday. The Rohingya, a marginalized ethnic group from Myanmar, frequently embark on risky maritime expeditions, enduring protracted and costly voyages in delicate vessels in an attempt to reach Malaysia or Indonesia.

Local navy commander Andi Susanto claimed that the 196 refugees landed in the Pidie region of Aceh Province, in a remote place.

Some of the evacuees left right away after arriving inland; accounts vary as to how many of the ten or seven who made their way to the neighboring hills sought safety. A representative for the local fishing community, Marfian, surmised that these people might have been middlemen who brought refugees to the area on purpose.

Residents and local authorities helped the refugees by bringing food and drink to those who were left stranded on the shore.

Images sent to AFP showed exhausted refugees—including mothers holding small children—waiting for assistance on the shore. With around 200 Rohingya reported dead or missing during such treacherous sea crossings last year, the UN refugee agency predicts that over 2,000 Rohingya have tried the dangerous trek to Southeast Asian countries in 2022.

There is a pattern to the Rohingya migrants traveling by water to Indonesia, which is followed in this episode. 184 Rohingya refugees were forced to swim ashore after being abandoned at sea before arriving in the town of Peureulak in eastern Aceh in March. The difficulties and dangers Rohingya refugees encounter on their journey to safety and a better life in Southeast Asia are brought to light by their continuous arrival.
