ANOTHER sign Trump upended the Republican party: Most GOP voters back union members who want a four-day week rather than carmakers in exclusive poll

If ever there were a sign that the party of Ronald Reagan is now the party of Donald Trump it comes in the latest DailyMail.com poll of Republican attitudes.

On the day when Trump visited Michigan to appeal to voters affected by the United Automobile Workers strike, viewers of the second Republican debate overwhelmingly said candidates should back the unions not carmakers.

Some 48 percent of respondents came down on the side of unions while only 31 percent said candidates should support carmakers in the dispute.

The issue has split the field of candidates, with the likes of biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy saying he had no patience with union bosses and Sen. Tim Scott invoking Reagan and the way he fired striking air traffic controllers.

But the results of the poll by J.L. Partners, who asked 546 Republican viewers of the debate for their thoughts, suggests the party has moved on from Reaganite views of unions.

Some 48 percent of Republican viewers of Wednesday’s debate said candidates should be on the side of union members rather than carmakers, according to DailyMail.com poll

‘The U.A.W. strike has won the backing of the public, Democrats, Independents, a sitting president and now Republican voters too,’ said James Johnson, of J.L. Partners.

‘It is not by a dramatic margin — and support could be specific to this one strike – but ‘it is clear that the politics of Donald Trump is more in line with the Republican base than the politics of Tim Scott is.’

The U.A.W. is on strike against the Big Three automakers — Ford, G.M., and Stellantis.

It plans to step up industrial action, which already involves 18,000 workers, on Friday as it pushed for 40 percent pay hikes over a four-year contract. The plan involves a four-day week.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the dispute offered a preview of Joe Biden and Trump will approach the election.

Biden joined striking workers on the picket line  in Michigan to deliver a direct appeal to blue-collar workers.

‘The middle class built this country,’ said Biden. ‘And unions built the middle class. That’s a fact.’

Trump has a more complicated relationship with unions, having initially steered clear of a unionized workforce as he struck out on his own in the construction industry before later going out of his way to placate union leaders to avoid the disruption of strikes.

He visited a day after Biden and used his trip (to a non-union plant) to appeal to workers and warn them that the transition to electric vehicles meant losing jobs to China.

‘It doesn’t make a damn bit of difference what you get because in two years you’re all going to be out of business,’ he said.

The issue caused a dilemma for some of the seven candidates who took the stage on Wednesday night aware that taking a traditional conservative line on unions risked alienating Trump supporters who like a more populist line.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who takes conventional conservative line on tax and spending, tried to turn the issue back to Biden and the cost of living.

‘Biden showed up on that picket line,’ she said. ‘But why are those workers actually there? It’s because of all of the spending that he is pushed through in the economy that’s raised the inflation.’

The setting, at the Ronald Reagan presidential library in California, could not have been more symbolic.

In 1981 the then president fire more than 11,000 air traffic controllers who went on strike. As federal workers, he had the power to terminate their employment.

Yet even that was also part of a political evolution. In the 1960s he was head of the powerful Screen Actors Guild that along with the writers’ union shut down movie production in a dispute over ‘residuals’ — long-term payments for reruns or other later airings.

The poll also found that viewers thought Trump made the right call in staying away from the debate and appearing in Michigan.

Almost two thirds said he made the right decision; 29 percent said he should have attended.

Viewers also said Trump was the real winner of the night. Some 27 percent of viewers judged him to be the night’s winner, beating tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy by one point and DeSantis by 10 points.

Israeli Power Company Reports Employee Fatally Struck By Attack From Lebanon

Shalom Abudi, a 56-year-old employee of an Israeli power firm, was murdered by an anti-tank missile strike that came from the other side of the Lebanese border.

The Israel Electric Corporation acknowledged that the event happened in the Dovev area, about half a mile (800 meters) from the border between Lebanon and Israel.

The bombing increased hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, a militia supported by Iran.

The region has experienced heightened confrontations, especially between Israel and Hezbollah, in the aftermath of Hamas’s October 7 onslaught from the Gaza Strip.

Indonesia Receives Almost 200 Rohingya Refugees, Reports Local Official

The largest group of Rohingya refugees to arrive in Indonesia’s westernmost region in months, approximately 200 people, including women and children, did so on Tuesday. The Rohingya, a marginalized ethnic group from Myanmar, frequently embark on risky maritime expeditions, enduring protracted and costly voyages in delicate vessels in an attempt to reach Malaysia or Indonesia.

Local navy commander Andi Susanto claimed that the 196 refugees landed in the Pidie region of Aceh Province, in a remote place.

Some of the evacuees left right away after arriving inland; accounts vary as to how many of the ten or seven who made their way to the neighboring hills sought safety. A representative for the local fishing community, Marfian, surmised that these people might have been middlemen who brought refugees to the area on purpose.

Residents and local authorities helped the refugees by bringing food and drink to those who were left stranded on the shore.

Images sent to AFP showed exhausted refugees—including mothers holding small children—waiting for assistance on the shore. With around 200 Rohingya reported dead or missing during such treacherous sea crossings last year, the UN refugee agency predicts that over 2,000 Rohingya have tried the dangerous trek to Southeast Asian countries in 2022.

There is a pattern to the Rohingya migrants traveling by water to Indonesia, which is followed in this episode. 184 Rohingya refugees were forced to swim ashore after being abandoned at sea before arriving in the town of Peureulak in eastern Aceh in March. The difficulties and dangers Rohingya refugees encounter on their journey to safety and a better life in Southeast Asia are brought to light by their continuous arrival.
